Some years ago, my wife and I were out driving around the countryside, and came upon a row of ancient elms lining the driveway to a large estate. It was autumn, and the sight of the tall, golden trees in the evening sunlight was breathtaking. Having stopped to admire them, we were approached by a young man of some 14 or 16 years. Guessing he was a local, I asked him if he knew how old the trees were.
