The MZ-M is the same. One day when I was bored I concluded it's linked to the light meter too, so the meter lock affects it. In a bright room or outside, put the camera into an auto mode, put the lens cap on and hit the meter lock. Then take the lens cap off, and the display is still dim. Turn off the meter lock and it suddenly brightens!
