Tom,

Fortunately, that is *not* my view on this matter.
How is the Pentax's ZX series compete realistically
with the Canon's stuff? And yet, the ZX series are
great sellers and compete very well with the Canons as
well as the Nikons in the consumer line of stuff.
Pros already had their minds on a Canon or a Nikon and
it is such a small percentage of the market share that
stealing a little from the two by Pentax just does not
make sense. The final judgement is really not only in
the design and implementation of the camera, but is
with the price and the quality of pictures it puts
out. Normal consumers are not stupid enough not to
know. They are smarter and more demanding than you
think.

So.. Why does Pentax want to put out both the film
*ist and the digital *ist?
My thoughts.. Possibly because, there is going to be
a mass exodus of compact users (a lot) who are looking
to upgrade their old IQZooms or IQZoom 105s genre that
are currently unimpressed with the small and super
slow lens zoom compacts. They also want to preserve
the compactness of their old IQZooms series. IQZoom
or the Zoom 70 and the 70x, 70 Milano (which is
basically a special 70x edition), 90 and 105s are
great little cameras and Pentax did sell a ton of them
in the past. The photos from them were just superb.

I personally get a lot of these inquiries from my
clients who has these cameras as to when Pentax is
going to put out something like this!
So far, Pentax is doing the general market that
service..

These *ist cameras with the FAJ lenses provide the
ideal upgrade path for these people. For film fans,
the *ist with a 28-80 FAJ serves very nicely as a
compact and easy to use camera with no aperature ring
to muddle around. Just like an IQZoom. For digital
fans or first digital tryouts, the digital *ist with a
28-80 FAJ serves that market very nicely as well..

Please keep in mind that it would be suicide for
Pentax to have to compete with Canon and Nikon at the
very same level. I think Pentax should serve a niche
market where there is no competition for their cameras
if they hope to make money at all. I hope with the
*ist, they are doing just that..

Rick...
