Hi,

My comment about Paal's posting was meant to be light-hearted,
but with an overview of my scepticism that _any_ manufacturer
would produce cost-no-object durable camera equipment.

I have had excellent service out of Pentax and (whisper it)
other photo equipment but Paal states that his new,
out-of-the-box lenses were defective in a way that is
unimportant in one sense, but which makes one wonder about their
build quality. _In my opinion_, all manufacturers are moving
towards a quality of product which, even with the care a
dedicated amateur may lavish, will become irredeemably
obsolescent (and financially irrepairable) within a few years.
This is exacerbated by, for example, the case of digital imaging
equipment, where knowledgeable buyers _expect_ their purchase to
be inadequate in quite a short time. This generates a general
expectation that all material things have a finite, short life
if they are to be any good.

I could dribble on about the environmental cost of camera and
other consumer goods production, but good taste and the Wrath of
Doug prevent me......just.
