I put the original and the cropped version side by side.  I agree with 
Jostein that both are nice pictures and which is "better" is entirely up 
to the viewer.  I don't think the crop benefits the picture as much as I 
expected.

BTW what kind of film did you use?  I like the shades of purple near the 
top edges of the flower.

I like shooting macro near wide-open.  It isolates the subject and makes 
the background easier to deal with, although it does present the 
challenge of preserving sharp focus where you want it.  I can't live 
without DOF preview.
