Well, as an option you can consider newest flatbed Canon Canosca 9900F
(http://www.usa.canon.com/html/conCprProductDetail.jsp?minisite=10000&modeli
d=8743&item=8781&section=10218 and brochure is here:

ype=Software&prodref=PS&subtype=Software&group_id=-1&level2catq=AllCats&x=2s
ection=0&item=111&modelid=8743&section=10274&pname=CanoScan%209900F) -
3200x6400 dpi optical res., 16 bit per channel, FARE 2 (removes dust &
scratches using IR channel, and additionally can restore color and remove
big grain) and it takes 35mm x 24 frames (negatives); 35mm x 8 frames
(mounted slides) medium-format; 4" x 5" transparency, and it has very fast
USB2/Firewire connection to the computer... It is supposed to cost around
400$ street. Seems like a good deal, Caveman has already 8000F and from what
he has send me, quality is pretty good, and it is supposed to be even better
in this new 9900F, thanks to new advanced lens with aspherical elements. I
would suggest you however to go to local Canon's dealer and check it
yourself with your favourite slides or negatives, then compare it to results
from film scanners that are within your reach.

Best Regards
Sylwek
