Is it the "hyper" modes, or do other brands have something
similar?  That's all I can think of, though I haven't used
anything more recent than the Super Program myself.

Canon, Nikon and Minolta has "shiftable program".
It's a program mode where you can alter the combination of the suggested aperture and shutter to suit your liking. It's not the same as HyperMode, since HyperMode is automatic shifting between aperture- and shutter priority. To my knowledge, the shiftable programs goes back to standard program mode when the shot has been taken, while HyperMode stays in the mode that was last selected.
