"Nowadays most pros I talk to assume that their expensive lenses are
'good enough'
in terms of optical quality, and they're interested in other stuff.
USM,
IS, VR, fps, rugged bodies, DSLR's, and so on. Sure, optical quality
plays a role in their decision to choose a brand, but it's one of
many,
many other factors."

A recent article in Shutterbug about the sports PJ that covers the Red
Sox. His camera (Nikon D1H? I forget) records 2.67 MP images, which
he ships to the Globe over the phone lines during the game. That maybe
resolution good enough for a newspaper, but what I don't' know is how
good does a lens have to be (or rather, how bad can it be) in terms of
resolution if this is all you are shooting?

DEfinitley one of the drawbacks of digital. Even if 2.67 MP is good
enough for the paper, a truly great shot will now be recorded only at
this resolution.
