The tool is a "key" the width of the lens mount. It attaches to the adaptor at two
points. My problem is that I didn't really look at it before I stuck it on, so now
the actual mechnism is hidden and I have not real sense of how to "fiddle" with it.

You all have me curious. What is this tool?

I have an original Pentax adapter that I purchased a long time ago. It came
in its own little bag, but no tool.

I use my thumbnail to remove it. I believe I was in Tucson where the sales
clerk said she did not have an adapter since the owner of the store said it
was difficult to remove. I proceeded to demonstrate it on my LX. She tried
it and commented on how easy it was. She was happy because this opened up
the whole world of screwmount lenses. I cannot recall what camera she owned.
