I scan 35mm B&W on my old  scsi HP PhotoSmart.  I scan as color negative and
then remove the color before the final scan.  The PhotoSmart will scan color
negatives at 2400dpi but will only scan B&W negatives at 1200dpi.  I am very
happy with the results of the scans.

Of course the limitation of the HP PhotoSmart is that it only does 35mm
negatives/film, slides and prints (not well) up to 5x7.  I know you do a lot
of MF so it would not be adequate for that.  It is relatively inexpensive
for what it does and the later models have the convenience of USB.
