Another comment on traveling.  I grew up in a middle class family and
traveling was done by car.  We simply could not afford plane travel,
which limited our vacations to the US and Canada (Mexico was 1500 miles
away).  It's much easier and cheaper for Europeans to get to another
country and experience that kind of diversity.  We've only really
traveled the last ten years because we finally had enough disposable
income to spend that kind o money on a trip.  And many people never
really get out of the "trips to Europe are for the folks better off than
me" mentality, even when they do have the money.  If people are not
exposed to something when they are young, there's more of a barrier to
overcome when they get older.  I admit that I was more likely to travel
to other countries because I hate vacations like cruises.
