Hi all,

The following is my translation. I tried to translate it
on word-to-word basis as much as possible. If my English
sounds funny, it's because my English is poor or their
Japanese is poor...<g>

Development of "High Class AF SLR" MZ-S
---Enhancing both many features and quick usability with
newly invented dial system---

March, 2001

Pentax Corporation, in pursue of "really user-friendly
camera", has developed a high class AF SLR, MZ-S which
enhances both many features and quick usability with
newly invented dial system. The new camera will be put as
reference at "Photo Expo 2001", which takes place in Tokyo
from 23 to 25 March, and in Osaka from 6 to 8 April.

Final specification, price, and sales date are not yet
confirmed.

Backgrounds of the Development
SLR system has been computerised based on high technology,
in order to meet various shooting situations. Many features
have been adopted to the system, resulting in complex
buttons/levers configurations, which often forces
photographers to shift the camera just for the setting.
Many customers urged us to produce a camera adopting many
features AND quick operation system settings.

In answer to these demand, Pentax developed in 1991 Pentax Z
series cameras, with the concept of "camera which never
miss a chance and the photographers' will". The series has
met the various demands of photographers with many features
based upon high computerisation and automation. In 1995,
Pentax MZ Series was introduced, with the concept of
"smaller SLR with easy-to-understand basic operation".
With traditional operation of dials and levers, the
light-weight series make a big hit through various levels
of customers.

In this context, MZ-S has been developed in order to
fulfill "both simple operation of dial system, and many
features and quick setting of computerisation". It
enhances many features, while it offers newly invented
operational system with easy-to-understand interface and
quick setting. We also gave the camera heavy consideration
of usability, high reliability, joy of possession, and
completeness, which many photographers have been demanding.
We have concentrated, in this AF SLR system, our long
history of pursuing "really usable camera" and of our
technology in developing SLR systems.
