I've had one of these for almost 4 years. They are built fine. I've had 
no problem that couldn't be solved by opening the cover and blowing some 
dust out. I like the way it works with color print film better than 
anything else. It really doesn't have a wide enough dynamic range for 
slide film. If you don't crop, you can make an 11x17 print that looks 
great viewed from a normal viewing distance (2 ft). I don't recall doing 
any scans of B&W film.

film scanner.  It lacks ICE and has questionable build 
quality but it's easy to find new for around $100.  So, for

thinking I could develop the b&w film at home and then scan

inkjet and leave quality enlargements to the fuji frontier.
