I already said somewhere that it must be alloy but for the purpose of the discussion in this list, referring to aluminum is good enough. I had no intention to go deeper than that. It is futile. We were talking about Aluminum, steel and brass etc in a general term.
Actually there is another thing I noticed and made me to believe the silver shells are soft. When I tighten the screws which hold the focus (from the front of the 31), the silver metal were compressed and dented, but the inner barrels didn't (they were understand the same stress). For that I do believe the inner barrels were much more rigid than the silver shells (obviousely 2 different metals). Could it be some sort of super rigid aluminum alloy? I don't think so, but I have no answer.
