Consider this: 24mmx36mm sensors are only significant with respect to ONE item: The coverage area of available lenses. But ... since it's easier to product 6MP sensors that are slightly smaller then the constraints of the 135 system are no longer significant. The sensor size is now the new basis for lens design -- NOT film image size.
With the new Fuji sensor being 37mm x 57mm, and certainly others coming, we'll see more use of new "medium format" (an archaic term because film is of lessening significance in R&D and Marketing) digital solution in the near future. Pentax is CORRECT to build a new "medium format" body optimized to larger sensor sizes. Retrofitting is a waste of engineering time. Only new product designs will be profitable in the long term. Otherwise, 3 years from now they may be building the only digital 645 that has a motor and gears in it!
