There is one hope for a cheap fix: Sometimes the connection between the
ribbon cable that passes over the pentaprism and connector socket which
it plugs into at the bottom of the chassis becomes dirty/corroded.
Cleaning the socket and the end of the ribbon cable fixes a lot of odd,
intermittent problems. Sometimes it's enough just to remove and reinsert
the cable into the socket a few times.

If it's not that it's likely to be impractical to repair, though :(
