the Nikon scanners do multisampling. this helps reduce the noise. i normally run with multisampling x4 and that helps a great deal with denser Provia slides and most Velvia slides. underexpose Velvia a little too much and mine too is helpless. you can see the detail but can't get it out very well. many others are worse though.
