I find it useful, but not specifically for the convenience of
using both a separate flash and the built in one, more for the
better balance of the combo camera-flash. I only had the
pleasure once of using a 500 FTZ on the Z-1p along with the
built in flash, doing contrast control flash (is it the correct
term?); the results were quite good.
I have no sure info about why Pentax did stop putting the
hotshoe on the right side, but I guess they had to when they
designed the MZ series cameras: a smaller camera wouldn't allow
for enough room (even the display is so small, there is no
exposure data in the MZ-5n/3, and I hate that...).
