This is generally true, but the image doesn't have to get less sharp. That depends on the resolution of the film/digital sensor. Both a 6 megapixel "full frame" sensor and a 6 megapixel smaller "APS sized" sensor has 6 megapixels, right? I.e. if you pack the pixels tighter on the sensor chip, you'll still get as many pixels ut of it even though the sensor is smaller.
