The shutter speed dial and the in-viewfinder indicator do match -- I know to check that with MXes because the first MX I ever owned was misaligned by a stop. I had a repairman fix it, along with a few other things, but the camera was already so heavily used (by a previous owner) that it didn't give me the Pentax quality feel that the MXes I have now do indeed posess.

I will try exercising the ASA dial a bit to see if that kicks the meter response back into a normal range.

Thanks for the replies, Joe

Joe,
A shot in the dark here, but check if the number on the dial knob and the
number on the viewfinder indicator is the same...
The connection between the two is a band (rubber?), and they can come out of
sync.

Sounds like a bad spot on a potentiometer (variable resistor). Could be
the film speed/shutter speed resistor or the aperture resistor. Try
playing around with the film speed setting and see if that changes
anything.
