Marnie, The FA * lenses have a wider focusing ring than regular FA lenses. This focusing ring can be pushed or pulled (it snaps into place) to switch the lens from AF to MF or MF to AF. So the basic motion is to let the lens focus using AF and then if you want to touch it up a bit, just pull the focus ring toward the camera body (quite natural motion) and manually focus a bit. Want AF back, just push the ring (snaps back) and you are doing AF again. Much nicer system than standard FA lenses where you have to reach to the lower side of the camera and push the switch.
