It's possible to get the camera+winder assembled wrong. I can't remember if the problem comes if you cock the shutter before assembly, or if you *don't* cock the shutter first; it's been a while since I used an ME. My solution was to take the winder off, change the state of the camera (by either tripping or cocking the shutter) and then re-unite the parts.
