I agree with you it looks ridiculous; however, a digital p&s with an optical viewfinder may need to be held that way and the LCD used in place of the optical viewfinder in order to: Use the macro mode (my Optio 550 viewfinder image isn't in focus if the camera's too close to the subject); Use the manual focus mode (no focus indicator in the optical viewfinder of said Optio 550); See the f-stop and shutter speed (this information is also not in the viewfinder).
