That's definitely the weak point in your system.
That's an old printer (a contemporary of the 700 series),
and there were always criticisms of the dithering software
in the Epson printer drivers.

Quite apart from the general improvements in printers (you
can get double the linear dpi of that olde Epson nowadays)
there are even one or two printers that work with two shades
of black ink.  Even better, though, are some third-party
packages which replace the regular three-colour ink cartridges
on some printers with a cartridge containig three shades of grey.
That, together with their own conversion software, are reported
to produce stunning resuts with greyscale images.
