Hi all,

Best shot I missed recently had to be from a couple months ago. It was
about 10:00 or 11:00 PM on a weeknight, and the full moon was well above the
horizon -- perhaps 40 or 50 degrees? Anyway, our region was blanketed by a
cold, dry air mass, and there was a very thin veil of cirrus clouds very
high in the atmosphere. Because of the relatively high density of small ice
crystals suspended in the atmosphere, the shaft of moonlight was refracted
into a fully formed ring of light completely encircling the moon. The sight
of that full moon totally surrounded by a thin circle of glowing light,
whose diameter spanned 45 degrees across my field of view, was a pretty
awesome sight. Could not have caught the entire circle on 35mm format with
a 50 mm lens -- would have needed a 24 mm to get it all. Aarrrgh!! I just
KNEW I should not have put my old Speed Graphic camera in a storage chest in
the back of the closet, and that I should keep a fresh box of 4x5 sheets in
the refrigerator, and that I should have an extra room for all my old
darkroom supplies, and..., and.... Excuses, excuses!
