I believe the whole "is it winding properly" detection logic in
modern automated-film-transport cameras (nothing to do with AF)
is based on detecting whether advancing the film turns those
sprocket wheels you can see at the end of the film guides, next
to the takeup spool.  If the film breaks, or somehow comes off
the takeup spool, (but the takeup spool can still turn), you'll
get the "Error" display.
