Umm, not really. I have already made a couple of wrong posts about what the
camera can and cannot do relating to lens compatability, after trying thing
out.
Everything should be challenged.

How it really works (I hope).

Forget about automatic with the pre A series lenses.

What seems to work (and I have tested this) is:

Unlock the shutter release for non A lenses in the custom functions.
Set the control wheel to M (manual).
Set the shutter speed to the desired shutter speed using the front control
wheel.
Set the aperture to the desired aperture using the lens aperture ring.
Focus and shoot.
You do not have access to the light meter, but you can use the preview
screen, which can be made to include a histogram for those that understand
them, to determine if the exposure is near correct.
Or, you can use an external light meter.
You get open aperture composing, the lens will stop down for exposure.

With screw mount lenses, the routine is the same except you don't get open
aperture composition, inless you leave the aperture wide open, stopping it
down just prior to taking the picture.

At least I think thats how it works.
