They did not "allow" for stop down metering with K mounts. They tried to stop
that entirely. If you have to partially dismount a lens you are using the
camera in a manor not supported by it. This is not to say you can't do it,
just that your not supposed to.

The camera has a lever which stops down the lens during exposure, what
it lacks is the lever which tells the camera what the lens is set to so
that the exposure can be calculated by the camera. On a lens set to
"A" this doesn't matter because the camera knows the range of apertures
available and only closes the aperture part way. If the lens is moved
off "A" the camera is again lost as to what the lens is set to and
can't know how much it can actually close the aperture.

To allow for stop down metering - metering with the aperture closed -
(by either using a screw mount lens and closing the aperture or half
undoing a k mount lens) They have added the Pentax function to let you
do it. They have made it a Pentax function and not a standard feature
because if you don't understand it and use the wrong lens and blame the
camera you won't want to buy any more wonderful Pentax products - If
you know enough to turn it on you should know enough to make it work.

Hope this helps.
