Yes, and by knowing that the production serial numbers were late models.
I've got older Super Taks with coatings that are clearly different from SMC
Taks. A few of the Super Taks have coatings that appear identical to SMC
Taks. I've also got some SMC Taks that lack the second pin. It seems
Pentax was in the habit back then of doing rolling production changes
without necessarily changing the model identification (e.g. use up all the
Super Takumar rings even though the elements are now SMC). Generally, the
SMC coatings are more bluish, while the Super Tak coatings appear more
orange/yellow (and in one horrible case of a 49mm size Super Tak 35/2:
green).
