I don't know where they would be getting one in Chicago.
I was downtown at the headquarters of Helix, our major multi-outlet camera store.
They had a close-out sign over the Pentax 35mm camera section.
Clerk said they weren't going to carry them any more.
This takes a 5-8 store Chicago/Milwaukee camera chain out of the picture.

You are right Cotty, if I must have one within 3-4 days, I could probably get one. I have bought from Sweden (thanks Lasse), England (thanks Peter), Japan, Hong Kong, from KEH and B&H and Adorama, from Oregon and Arizona...
The problem is that I asked my local dealer to order one for me, I bugged
him to bug the distributor/rep to accept the order almost even before there
was an Order Number in the system. He is a good guy, he is trying to help,
and I feel comitted to buying the camera from him. As I did with my MZ-S. So
my request for information was partly out of frustration, but also to try
and ascertain the real state of affairs with respect to the Pentax
distribution "system." If I hear that Chicago and St. Louis and Denver and
OK City and Omaha and Wichita are all getting ist-D's and KC is not, then I
immediately trundel off to the dealer to tell him that he is not getting
proper respect. As it is, it does seem that onesies and twosies are being
scattered around, mostly to larger dealers (and photo mag editors?). So I
will sit and grumble and wait somewhat impatiently but resignedly.
I would still be surprised if more than a few hundred of Version 1 were produced. Problems noted, version 2 in production (he says optimistically...)
