Maybe, but it will take a generation for them to shed their poor quality lets dupe the public image. My understanding is that the highest quality rated cars of 20 years ago had more problems then an average rated car today. So as long as the Japanese keep building relatively trouble free cars they will be considered more dependable. I still remember the flap when it was discovered that GM was putting auto transmissions designed for the Chevette in full size Caddys, Stuff like that stays in the back of the mind for a long time.
