But, seriously, Cotty (okay, I'm never serious...) as I've grown older, I've come to appreciate that simple, well executed designs often work as well, or better, than more complex designs.
Yes, they sometimes require more work, but one is then rewarded with the glowing satisfaction of having contributed something more to the process than might otherwise be the case.
I'm thinking (of course) photographic equipment, but also stereos (belt drive manual turntables being a love of mine), bikes of course (you already mentioned my single speed fixed gear track bikes), automobiles with manual trannies, etc, etc.
And, of course, another advantage of the simpler machines, is that there is less to break down (although, when a breakdown does occur, it can be catastrophic), maintenance is therefore often simpler, and repairs are either possible by the owner, or simpler and therefore cheaper, at a shop.
Another thing that I've come to appreciate as I grow older, is that a well brewed beer is one of life's undeniable and enduring pleasures. I'm currently having a local micro-brew called Steam Whistle - nothing spectacular, mind you, just a nice smooth lager, quality ingredients, no preservatives, light and pleasant with little aftertaste - Aaaahhhhh. Naturally, made with only four ingredients (malt, yeast, hops, water), so here's another example of how simpler is better. <vbg>
One of these days, I must learn a bit about single malt whiskeys. Maybe at GFM?

Frankie my lad, no modification is necessary to any camera body. A very slight mod may need to be done to an EOS/M42 adapter, that's all.
As for just going out and buying a cheap Spottie, well...yes. But when you want to climb a big mountain, you look at Everest.
