Given the current technological constraints there would be little (if any) advantage apart from the marketing number game to increase pixel counts for P&S style cameras. And 2/3-frame DSLRs aren't far behind. New technologies such as the Foveon f3 offer the greatest potential for advancement. Looking back into the archives we have been speaking about 6Mp sensors generally on this list since at least October 2001.
