My brother was an engineer who worked on the US Interstate System. He's told me that the roads were truly designed for an optimum speed of 80 mph. This was to enable patrolmen involved in high speed chases not to be flung off the highway on curves and the rest of us driving at 65 mph not to slide down the same embanked curves.
Frankly I was appalled at the state of some of the highways, especially in NYC! Ni wonder there are so many SUVs - needed to traverse the potholes.
