This is an interesting one. I would imagine the *ist D is very similar in this respect to all of the current crop of DSLRs, mine included. However, coming from manual focus cameras like the MX and LX, I was not prepared for the autofocus operation. If I had had an intermediate step between manual and DSLR, say with something like a PZ-1, then I dare say the transition would have been much easier. I found that on the digi, using single-shot AF, the delay in allowing the camera to lock onto a subject and then allow the shutter to fire was unacceptable. I come from a school where (depending on subject) I'm shooting as I focus. This is particularly applicable to faces - if I wait for focus confirmation, the shot may well be history by the time the shutter fires. When I press the shutter, I expect it to fire immediately! After trying all the different variations, I have settled on the following as my default: focus set to manual or AF, frame rate set to continuous (not single). This way, you press the shutter, and it fires whether or not the focus is there. If using manual focus, I'm turning the focus ring as I'm shooting. If using AF, then the AF is focussing as I'm shooting, and once I get the focus, I can lock it with a simple press of a button with my thumb. I never use single-shot mode now, ever. This may sound simple to experienced AF users, but I suspect quite a few *ist D buyers will be manual guys like me, and until I figured out the above, I thought for a minute that I had made a dreadful mistake. I wanted a DSLR to act exactly like the manual cameras I had migrated from, plus all the extras like AF and high speed flash sync etc. Once I realised that all this was possible after a little fiddling, I was a happy chappy.
