Well, I probably shoot more motorsports than most folks on this group.
I use a PZ-1p, usually in autofocus mode - it seems to work quite well.
The big drawback for the PZ-1p, when compared to the 5n, is the single
AF sensor.  But if you want to use a ZX-5n in central-sensor mode you're
basically limiting yourself to PZ-1p functionality on a body with a less
powerful AF motor (or so say those who have used both cameras).

I'll be picking up an MZ-S as soon as they become available; occasionally
that single central sensor means you would autofocus on the wrong car.
But most of the time central AF works quite well.  From the mention of
prototypes vs. factory cars I presume you're talking sports cars - here's
a shot I took last year when the ALMS came to Laguna Seca:

That's two cars in one corner, and the PZ-1p autofocus was up to it.
