Defects in the sensor?

Hot pixels are sensor elements that got more excited than they should have. They usually show up as excessive noise during long exposures. The key to knowing whether it's due to a defective CCD is whether the hot pixels show up in the same place each time. If they're defects, they'll show up in the same location in each image, and will appear even in images with short exposure times.

There is a good explanation here with some suggestions on how to test the sensor and do post-capture fixing:

Is there also the potential for cold pixels?
