I was surprised at this as well, but last night I checked, and it seems
to be plastic. It's a very stiff plastic that kind of looks like it
could be metal...

I never use power zoom, except by accident.

BTW, mine was previously owned by a Nascar photographer, apparently as a
doorjamb and skeet target. Looks well used, but works fine. However, I
can see (or feel) how this lens might not be the most robust
mechanically. I've just not had a problem with mine.

Maybe Paal is cursed?
