Hi Paul,
In general I've found that "problems homing in on a basic setting for
scanning negatives (or slides) (can't seem to get a combination of film
type and other settings that yields a good scan)" is typical of every
scanner I've used. My proficiency with either scanner I've used is such
that it can take anywhere between 5 minutes and an hour to produce the
desired results. Another factor could be that typically I don't get around
to this until around 10/11 PM. :-(
When I use Corel PhotoPaint 7 as the image editor I often use the
Intellihance option which usually gets the image close to what it should
look like fairly quickly.
