I considered this scanner just recently but opted for the Tamarack 2400FS
($199 from Fry's Electronics in Houston, the Pacific Image was $179 I think)
based solely on the fact that it scans to 2400dpi vs. the lower 1600 dpi or
so scan of the Pacific Image. So far the b/w neg scans are really quite
good. A 2400 dpi scan of a 35mm neg gives about a 300 dpi print at 8x10 good
for evaluating the neg and showing around. The 35mm transparency scans are
OK, but I need to work on it. There seems to be a magenta streak in the blue
sky. I then get good prints from a Fuji Frontier system of the ones I like.
The color neg scans need the most work but OK right out of the box and for
the proofing I want it for. Like you, the provided software (DocuMan and
DocuPal) is clunky so I access it (it is TWAIN compliant) using Photoshop
and/or MS Picture-It. I don/t expect to make presentation grade images
using this scanner. I am using it as a digital darkroom to provide the
contact sheets and cropping sheets I cannot do in a wet darkroom. On the
whole I find mine a good investment and value. Maybe some day I will be
able to afford one of the higher up scanners to do my MF stuff as well.

Subject: RE: Pacific Image PrimeFilm 1800u Scanner
I have just purchased this scanner and wonder if the shortcomings I
encountered are typical:
- problems homing in on a basic setting for scanning negatives (can't seem
to get a combination of film type and other settings that yields a good scan
(transparencies seem to scan quite well, although not as good as more
expensive scanners)
- software supplied with the scanner is difficult to use
Any comments? I am thinking of returning it for something else - it's not
doing what I need it to do (scan negs)
