To those that came across it:
  Does it make any difference if you send 48 bit data to commercial
  laser printers like Fuji Frontier and the like? Are these printers
  capable to represent the additional tones the 48 bit image provides
  over a 24 bit one? And if not, is there any difference in the
  final print between a 24 bit Tiff and a low compression Jpeg? [of
  course we are talking about enlargements from 11x15 (20x30 cm) up]
  
  While the benefit of 16 bit/channel is obvious to me in digital
  post-processing, I'm not so sure about it when it gets to printing.
  The operator of a Frontier machine did his best to dishearten me,
  though I suspect he would rather avoid dealing with the 62 MB Tiffs
  I was prepared to feed him.
