Ryan, it was never meant to sound like a problem specific to Singapore. The warning, as it was relayed to me by locals, was specific to crowded areas like Chinatown. With advice that specific in a country known for a low-crime rate, I felt it was relevant to relay to another visitor. We can each decide for ourselves how seriously to take that advice.
In any case, I tend to be more wary when I'm holding an *ist-D in hand and carrying a C-5050 and several lenses in my bag. :-)
