AFAIK, this is the spot of spot metering. If you remove default focusing screen and replace it with split screen, you're going to lose spot metering.
All that the spot-metering circle on the focusing screen does is to indicate the area being metered when spot-metering is selected. If you're using a screen without that circle, spot metering will still work, but you'll have to guess or estimate the precise area being metered. Pat White
