Well, it's not worse than with the "newer" screwmount lenses.
Instead of flipping a switch you have to turn the aperture ring
(which is the front-most control of the lens) between wide-open
(focusing mode) and the selected aperture (metering/exposure mode).
The selected aperture acts as a stopper at the end of he throw so
there's no need for a visual check - you can stop down while looking
through the viewfinder. In order to select the effective aperture, you
have to pull the ring and thus be able to click through all aperture
stops.
I find this lens particularly useable in available light, when I
only switch between 2.8 and 2 and sometimes leave it on 2.8 when it's
bright enough to focus. Otherwise I'm sure I'd sometimes forget to
close it down before shooting.
As Gainfranco mentioned, this lens has nice bokeh indeed, and this
I think is both an optics attribute as well as due to its 16 (!) blades
aperture.
