I've actually never shot with the lens wide open. It does look a bit soft on the focusing screen though, especially at the wide end. Stopped down to 5.6 or smaller, the pictures look tack sharp. And the extra bit of light in the viewfinder is useful when I'm shooting w/ flash indoors (did a wedding almost entirely with this lens. Bride and groom were pleased).
It does seem to flare a lot more easily than most of my other lenses though...

As good as this lens is, it really is a 4,5/35-105 with a one stop wider
opening for easy focussing...
At 3.5 it is very soft and image quality improves dramatically if you stop
down a little bit.
