The biggest speed gain I can think of is being able to upload a digital file via a wireless, cell phone, or even a regular telephone connection, from half-way around the world in a very short time. Some news photographers carry direct satellite communications gear that gets the pictures to the home office from anywhere in the world, no matter how remote.
