i spent a good part of Saturday afternoon doing an American Bald Eagle survey to count the number of birds roosting in the area. here are some of the pictures from the day. all were taken with my *istD and Sigma 50-500mm, mostly at the 500mm end. there are 10 pictures total, 4 of which have eagles. two are taken in flight as they made a moderately low pass overhead going toward the roosting site. then there are two pretty awful shots of the roosting site about half a mile away in the forest. i measured it on the topographic map as being almost exactly half a mile away. awful as they are, in each of the shots, you should be able to make out at least 7 bald eagles roosting in the trees. best guess as it got dark was that we saw about 28 bald eagles head toward the roosting site in the space of about 2 hours. we could see up to 15 of them at a time roosted through binoculars and spotting scopes.
