I have and use that scanner.  I only use Vuescan software with it and
have not noticed anything like you mentioned.  You might try a
download of Vuescan (www.hamrick.com) - trial software is free and see
if it makes any difference.  If you still see the same problem with
that, I would guess you have a problem with the scanner.
