I have a lens with a tripod collar. Do I attach
some sort of head to put on the monopod and then> attach the lens?
I attach directly to the 'pod and use the collar for leveling or to puposely dial in a little skew. Don't see how a head would be much help for panning; I think that's more of a matter choosing where you stand vis-a-vis the geometry of the track.
Tilting is a special case: rock forward or back on a rigid pod and you lose your stability. Really Right Stuff's web site shows a pretty slick homebrew solution using a Bogen swivel mated to an Arca-Swiss- style clamp. Looks a bit more robust and easier to control than a ballhead, especially with a heavy lens.
