You mention race season, I presume you mean cars, Christian? So you're
looking at long lenses on the pod? I have a monopod and don't use a head
- the lens goes straight onto the bush - not even a quick release plate,
although that would be handy.

IMO a head gets in the way when all you want to do is keep it as simple
and as steady as poss. Also less to go wrong. Wandering about with a
300mm balanced over your shoulder - could be a lot to lose if the had
suddenly decided to part company <g>.
